    Glastonbury Festival

    Pilton, Somerset, EnglandJune

One of the oldest and most prestigious performing arts festivals with diverse lineups and a massive 'tented city'.

Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts is the world's most famous music festival and a rite of passage for music lovers worldwide. Held on Worthy Farm in Somerset, England, this five-day extravaganza attracts over 200,000 people and features more than 3,000 performances across over 100 stages.

Founded by dairy farmer Michael Eavis in 1970, when 1,500 people paid £1 each (which included free milk from the farm), Glastonbury has grown into a cultural institution while maintaining its alternative, countercultural spirit. The festival is famous for its eclectic lineup, which spans rock, pop, electronic, world music, jazz, and everything in between, while also featuring theater, circus, cabaret, and art installations.

The Pyramid Stage is Glastonbury's iconic centerpiece, where legendary headliners from David Bowie to Beyoncé have performed. But the festival's magic lies in its diversity of stages and areas: the pulsing dance music of the Arcadia spider, the hedonism of Shangri-La, the family-friendly Theatre & Circus fields, the healing oasis of the Green Fields, and the late-night mayhem of Block9.

Glastonbury is as much about the experience as the music. The site becomes a temporary city, complete with its own newspaper, cinema, and even a nightclub in a converted church. Wellies and mud are legendary components of the experience—the Somerset clay transforms into a quagmire in wet years, becoming part of Glastonbury folklore.

The festival maintains strong ties to social causes, raising millions for charities including Oxfam, Greenpeace, and Water Aid. It's a place where the corporate world feels distant, and the spirit of community and creativity flourishes.
