    Burning Man

    Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USAAugust/September

A unique experiment in community and art in the desert focused on self-expression and 'leaving no trace'.

Burning Man is not a festival—it's a temporary city, a social experiment, and an art movement rolled into one extraordinary week in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. Each August, roughly 80,000 'Burners' gather to create Black Rock City, a metropolis that appears from nothing and vanishes without a trace, embodying the event's 'Leave No Trace' principle.

Founded in 1986 on a San Francisco beach when Larry Harvey and friends burned an eight-foot wooden effigy, Burning Man has evolved into a global phenomenon guided by ten principles including radical self-reliance, radical inclusion, gifting (no commerce except ice and coffee), and communal effort. The culmination remains the burning of 'The Man,' a towering wooden figure, and the Temple, a space for mourning and reflection.

Black Rock City is organized in a semicircle around the central playa, a flat expanse of ancient lakebed that hosts massive art installations. These aren't museum pieces to observe—they're interactive experiences to climb, explore, and often burn. Mutant vehicles (art cars) cruise the playa, ranging from fire-breathing dragons to mobile dance clubs.

Themed camps form the backbone of the community, offering everything from meditation sessions to pancake breakfasts to experimental theater. Music ranges from world-class DJs at massive sound camps to intimate acoustic performances at tiny encampments. But Burning Man explicitly rejects 'spectating'—everyone is expected to participate, contribute, and create.

The harsh environment—extreme heat, dust storms (whiteouts), and freezing nights—is part of the experience, demanding self-reliance and community interdependence. The result is a sense of connection and possibility that participants describe as life-changing.

Burning Man has influenced art, technology, and culture far beyond the desert, inspiring regional burns worldwide and a year-round community committed to its principles.
