    Chinese New Year

    Global, ChinaJanuary/February

One of the world's most significant cultural events with dragon dances, fireworks, and family reunions.

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is the most important celebration in Chinese culture and one of the world's most widely observed festivals. Celebrated by over 1.5 billion people across China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Chinese communities worldwide, this 15-day festival marks the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar.

Preparations begin weeks in advance, with families thoroughly cleaning their homes to sweep away bad luck and make room for good fortune. Homes are decorated with red lanterns, paper cuttings, and couplets bearing auspicious phrases. Red, the color of luck and prosperity, dominates every aspect of the celebration.

New Year's Eve is dedicated to family reunion dinners, considered the most important meal of the year. Tables overflow with symbolic dishes: whole fish (representing abundance), dumplings (shaped like ancient gold ingots for wealth), noodles (for longevity), and spring rolls (resembling gold bars).

As midnight approaches, the world's largest fireworks displays light up skies across Asia. Dragon and lion dances wind through streets, their rhythmic drums believed to drive away evil spirits. Children receive red envelopes (hongbao) containing money, and everyone exchanges wishes of "Gong Xi Fa Cai" (wishing you prosperity).

The celebration culminates with the Lantern Festival on the 15th day, when communities gather to admire elaborate lantern displays and solve riddles written on them.

Each year is associated with one of twelve zodiac animals, adding another layer of meaning to the celebrations and predictions for the year ahead.
